So you’re ready to go out and get that awesome experience? It could be a summer or part time job, perhaps a co-op position or even your first full time job after graduation but you’re not sure of your resume or perhaps you don’t have one yet. Here’s a look at the most common style of resume that would be applicable to students and new graduates with limited work exp

Contact Info – be sure to include your full name, complete address and phone number. Ideally the email address you want to include sounds professional instead of hotguy@, koolgirl@ or you get the idea.

Profile – in this area, you should include some highlights of your skills and accomplishments. Include at least 5 points such as:

PROFILE

  • 1 Year of Administrative and Customer Service Experience (list experience gained from school, co-op/summer or part time jobs)

  • Office and Retail Experience (list industry experience if you have it)

  • Achieved Award for ___________ (list school or job achievement / honors / scholarship etc)

  • Proficient with MS Office, Simply Accounting, Internet and Email Programs (list major computer skills)

  • Excellent Communication and Interpersonal Skills (list soft skills)

  • Strong Organizational and Time-Management Skills (list soft skills)

Education – this is the area to include all of your educational accomplishments. Be sure to highlight any courses that are related to the position you are applying for and want to bring to the attention of the employer.

Courses Include: Intro to Management Functions, Intro to Economics, Principals of Marketing, Operations Management, Organization Design, List your relevant courses.

If you are a student and are applying for a co-op, summer or part time position, you can structure your resume as follows. This will give the employer an idea regarding your future post secondary plans as well.

Sept 2009 – 2012         Business Marketing Diploma, Humber College


Experience
– regardless of how much or little experience you have, this is the area to highlight all of your experience and accomplishments. If you have limited experience, you can include anything from school, camp and volunteer experiences to co-op, summer and part time positions to highlight your skills and achievements.

Below are some key words to utilize when describing your experience. You may use these words more than once and be sure to include at least 5 points to describe all of your duties. Most importantly, remember your grammar! Use past tense for past experiences and present tense for current experiences. Don’t mix them up!
